About Lantern
Lantern’s current official site describes a nonprofit consumer VPN developed by Brave New Software Project, Inc., rather than only a browser proxy. The legacy getlantern.org address redirects to lantern.io, which provides branded download pages for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux. Its focus remains censorship resistance and access in restricted networks, so it should not be represented simply as an interchangeable conventional VPN.
The service describes Smart Routing that protects traffic selected for protection while allowing other traffic to travel directly. It also offers private-server capability, split tunneling and multiple circumvention transports. This routing model matters when assessing whether all traffic will pass through the service. The free version has a daily data limit in most countries, but the company says limits are removed where payment is blocked or unsafe. Pro removes the data limit and adds server selection, ad blocking and support for five devices.
The privacy policy claims no browsing, DNS or user-linked connection logs while acknowledging limited subscription, support and technical information, including device identifiers and aggregate usage. The audit page lists NCC Group assessments from 2016 and 2020 with a 2022 remediation review, and a Subgraph assessment still marked in progress. The latter is not treated as a completed audit. Current subscription prices, renewal amounts and refund terms were not established from the inspected pages.
