SSL VPN: The Alternative Solution

{ Posted on Jun 27 2009 by admin } in Categories : General

I have always used PPTP vpn because it is by far the simplest to setup and works great most of the time. I use it when travelling to watch the US and UK TV shows online and for security at Wi-Fi hotspots. In cases where port 1723 (PPTP) is blocked or GRE packets are disabled, for example in countries like Oman or Belize, it is recommended to use L2TP/IPSEC which uses a different port and protocol and is slightly more secure. In many cases using L2TP is actually a little faster, and I have witnessed this in the UAE. However, in the rare case when both PPTP and L2TP won’t work for you, such as in an office network with strong firewalls or at university or hotels that block everything except web traffic then you will need another solution…

SSL based vpn can use any port but in most cases the VPN provider would use the same port as your browser does when accessing secure ‘https’ sites (port 443) so this port is never blocked on any network for obvious reasons. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is a cryptographic protocol that uses certificates to encrypt and authorize a connection. It is generaly used for securing shoping sites and for online banking. Most vpn providers offer SSL VPN based on the OpenVPN server. This is an opensource server software that requires that you install the openvpn client software on your pc in order to establish a tunnel over the SSL protocol. Compatible software is available for Mac, Windows and Linux machines. You might be able to find a compatible client for the iPhone or other mobile device. READ MORE »

Making money online with VPN

{ Posted on Apr 16 2009 by admin } in Categories : General

One of the easiest way of making money online is by promoting other people’s products or services. Affiliate programs are the most common and oldest way of doing this and are perfect for anyone looking for easy ways to generate a side income while keeping the initial costs to a minimum. I started out doing this many years ago promoting hosting companies, antivirus software, casinos and dating sites. In most cases they worked out and I got my monthly checks. However those markets are now saturated and you will need to fine a new niches products to promote and that’s where VPN accounts come in!

VPN accounts and now really popular and sell really well and require little effort to promote, a few Google ads or a link on your site or blog would be enough. VPN providers are willing to give you up to 30% of each sale as commission for referring buyers to them. That’s up to $18-20 per sale! READ MORE »

Watching BBC iPlayer from outside the UK

{ Posted on Apr 13 2009 by admin } in Categories : Contributions

News around the clock, a plethora of TV and radio channels and quality shows. It is the largest broadcaster in the world. It is the most watched TV channel in the UK. It is called BBC and we all love it.

Going to the BBC online website you can browse the latest news headlines, check the TV schedule, check the latest sports results and most interestingly watch TV shows via their iPlayer a day or two after they air on TV! With BBC’s iPlayer you can easily view virtually everything one can watch on TV. There are reports of one couple in the UK who sold their TV and now are watching everything on the Internet, not needing to pay the TV tax anymore!

If you’re a man, then probably you’re into Top Gear. The Apprentice would make a good watch too, while the new series of Doctor Who might appeal to the female viewers. The Planet Earth documentary series is also available and is much appreciated as well. READ MORE »

Why use a VPN account?

{ Posted on Apr 10 2009 by admin } in Categories : General

VPN is one of the fastest growing internet services and for good reason too. They can be used for so many things, including things you wouldn’t think of at first. I started using them back in 2007 when visiting friends in the Unied Arab Emirates and discovered that Skype was blocked by the local ISP (Etisalat). Back then i used an account with company called Rox Networks but have since moved on Banana VPN to unblock sites and access Skype while abroad. Bellow are the main uses i could think of:

  • Hide your real IP
  • Secure you internet connection
  • Get an IP address in another country
  • Prevent spying in your office/work/school
  • Bypass proxies and filters
  • Access blocked sites (like in Thailand, UAE, Egypt etc.).
  • Access BBC iPlayer & Channel 4
  • Bypass ISP speed limits on P2P networks
  • Play online games, use Spype, MSN and ICQ
  • Prevent online attacks
  • You will look cool to your friends
  • And girls will like you even more! :-)

If you can think of any more just add them in a comment.

VPN on your Nokia phone or PDA!

{ Posted on Apr 10 2009 by admin } in Categories : General

If you just bought a new Nokia phone then you probably noticed it came with an IPSEC based vpn client software. That client provided by Nokia is completely useless for normal usage and requires a special Nokia approved server which is very complicated to setup. The only way to use VPN is through the new and only PPTP client on the market called SymVPN. This will work on most S60 (3rd edition) devices based on Symbian OS 3.1 like Nokia E-Series: E51, E60, E61, E61i, E63, E65, E66, E70, E71, E90 And N-series. You will need to buy the software ofcourse, install it on your phone and then enter the VPN account details you got from your provider. Currently SymVPN is the only way to use PPTP VPN on Nokia phones and has been tested with Banana VPN, Happy VPN, Liberty VPN, WiTopia, Hotspot and VPNAccounts.com.

Visit the official site for more info: Symvpn by Telexy Networks (14-day full trial version available)
